Is Bowling Over 5200 Years Old?

The earliest possible evidence of a game resembling bowling is believed to have been discovered at a site in Egypt dating back to 3200 BC.  Games involving pins continued to evolve throughout history.  Washington Irving even noted that Rip Van Winkle awoke to the sound of “crashing ninepins”.

The modern tenpin variety became popular in the US by the 1880s. The game was largely developed to circumvent laws banning ninepin games due to the proliferation of gambling. Add a tenth pin and the law no longer applied! By 1895, the game began to be standardized and national competitions became popular.

Today, bowling is enjoyed by over 100 million people in over 90 countries.
