July 2nd was actually the date that the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence.

July 4th was the date that the Declaration of Independence for formally adopted.

While July 4th celebrations were common every year since 1776, Independence Day did not become a federal holiday until 1870.

Three US presidents have died on July 4th – James Monroe and two signers of the the Declaration of Independence: John Adams and Thomas Jefferson.

Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest has been held every July 4th since 1972.
